Practice What You Preach

2 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.

Prayer: Father God thank you for this opportunity to preach, teach, and illuminate your scripture today. Holy spirit move in the hearts of those that are listening in a mighty way, that a change of life would happen in Jesus Christ name Amen!

Romans you will discover the revelation of God’s judging and saving righteousness in the gospel of Jesus Christ. We will learn that God judges' sin and at the same time manifest his saving mercy.

Paul is very explicit sharing this to the church of Rome, what he knows, seen, and heard concerning the people of God and of this world

  • God's wrath is not a reckless rage, an uncontrollable anger, a senseless fury, or an unjust vengeance. The wrath of God is a precise and controlled response to the belittling of his holiness. Everyone who perishes under the wrath of God in eternity will not be because God lost his temper with them and mistreated them.

  • Righteousness is the quality or state of being morally correct and justifiable. It can be considered synonymous with "rightness" or being "upright".

• A person is righteous coram deo, that is, he is in a right relationship with God, when he simply receives the imputed obedience of Christ and the forgiveness of sins through faith. ... A human person is not righteous in God's eyes because of his choice or commitment, his good works or his piety, his emotions or intellect. He is righteous because of the forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus.

God's Righteous Judgment

Therefore, you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.

1- You are not exempt from the judgement of God

Paul continues his letter to the Roman Church, basically tapping them on the shoulder to remind them, Jews are not exempt from the wrath and judgement of God because of God’s covenantal promise to them in the Old Testament. God did not give them a right to live sinful lives and judge others. Today God does not give us a right to live sinful lives and judge others to. With Paul explicitly echoing the words “you have no excuse” takes us back to verses 18 through 20 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, [g] in the things that have been made. So, they are without excuse.

Let me remind you when you pass judgement on another you will sentence yourself to death. Jesus taught his disciples “According to the Gospel of John, the Pharisees, in an attempt to discredit Jesus, brought a woman charged with adultery before him. Then they reminded Jesus that adultery was punishable by stoning under Mosaic law and challenged him to judge the woman so that they might then accuse him of disobeying the law. Jesus thought for a moment and then replied, “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” The people crowded around him were so touched by their own consciences that they departed.

When Jesus found himself alone with the woman, he asked her who were her accusers. She replied, “No man, lord.” Jesus then said, “Neither do I condemn thee: go and sin no more.”

2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.

What are you practicing?

They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness, gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?

4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

2- God is kind, but not soft

Do you think you can escape the judgement of God living like a animal, living a wildlife. God is not soft, but he is kind.

“You didn’t think, did you, that just by pointing your finger at others you would distract God from seeing all your misdoings and from coming down on you hard? Or did you think that because he’s such a nice God, he’d let you off the hook? Better think this one through from the beginning. God is kind, but he’s not soft. In kindness he takes us firmly by the hand and leads us into a radical life-change.”- Eugene H Peterson

God s kindness is designed to lead us to repentance... a drastic life change... A gospel moment of cross

5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.

3- What will my day of judgement reveal?

Paul identified the issue... it was the heart of those proclaiming the gospel. Their hearts were the economy of wrath... your heart should be the economy of God’s righteousness...

Will your day reveal wrath or will it reveal righteousness

Can I give you the secret: How do we see God loving through wrathful at the same time?

That is because the cross of Christ is simultaneously a display of God's wrath towards sinners and his love for sinners. Jesus stands in our place and God pours out his intense anger on his Son in our place. ... Martin Luther summed it all up with the idea that we see God's love through his wrath.

How do we see God's love?

God's love is shown by justifying us (or declaring us innocent) by grace through faith in Christ. Christ is treated as if he were the sinner, and the sinner is treated as if he were the righteous one. God now sees us through Christ's righteousness instead of through our sin.

“19 For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.”

Communion:

1 Cor. 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for[a] you. Do this in remembrance of me.”[b] 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
